Chapter 60: Black Jade City Mutation (VI)
“…Alright, let’s do it.”
The soldier thought for a moment, seemingly agreeing it was the best choice—
With just five of them, they couldn’t protect much. Regrouping and gathering reinforcements was the priority.
“I’m Norsen, captain of Black Obsidian’s Sixty-Third Heavy Armor Squad. Your name, miss?”
The heavy-armored captain introduced himself, then asked for my name.
“Su Mengmeng, just an adventurer. I know a bit of magic.”
I blinked, giving a simple reply.
“Got it, Miss Su Mengmeng… Let’s move out.”
Norsen nodded, and the other four soldiers regrouped. After a brief explanation of the plan, we set off together toward the south gate.
Black Obsidian’s north faced the vampire and dark elf frontlines, making the south the “rear”—where the military’s logistics were based. To escape, the south gate was the way out.
Most importantly, the train station was in the south.
The area around Black Obsidian had only small villages. The next major city was over a thousand kilometers away—walking that distance would be deadly.
Even if I could slog through, my egg babies need crystal energy. Where would I find crystals in the wilderness? Small villages wouldn’t offer big money or suitable crystals.
I had to leave Black Obsidian before things got so bad that the train station was completely locked down! Otherwise, if I ended up a wilderness hermit, I might survive, but my egg babies would starve!
I suddenly felt high-tier bloodlines weren’t all that great. For now, my egg babies, stuck in their shells and needing crystal energy, were a burden.
But no matter what, I’d never abandon them.
In my past life, I was alone for so long, thinking my comrades were trustworthy—until they stabbed me in the back.
Now, even if I didn’t carry them myself, I birthed these two. They’re my blood-bound children—how could I ever give them up?
No matter what, I’d get them safely to a secure city!
With that resolve, we hadn’t gone far when a series of booming sounds came from the north.
They sounded like artillery, but distant, almost like thunder.
I didn’t think much of it, but Norsen and the five soldiers paled, stopping to glance north.
“That’s… a thousand-millimeter heavy cannon! How!? Did the other races break through two defense lines in a day!?”
Norsen’s face went ashen, clearly familiar with the defense lines around Black Obsidian. I was a bit lost, but one thing was clear—
The enemy was closing in on Black Obsidian! My time was running out!
I didn’t know why the other races suddenly breached a frontline the human empire held for over a decade, but the situation was grim!
“Don’t freeze! Move!”
I shouted, snapping the five soldiers back to reality.
Norsen nodded, hurrying with me toward the south gate.
It felt surreal, but I had no time for stray thoughts!
With that, I kept moving swiftly along the street’s edge.
Explosions continued faintly across Black Obsidian, and the sounds of combat hadn’t stopped since the start. This was no small-scale infiltration anymore.
