Chapter 31: Everything Is Fateโs Choice
In the rain, the blonde girl buried her head in her knees, her disheveled hair and bloodied wounds making her seem pitifully fragile.
Of course, thatโs what someone who hadnโt seen her skills would think. In reality, she likely didnโt need helpโmaybe she was just crying alone in a corner after a breakup.
โIf youโre fine, Iโm leaving.โ
Tina wasnโt keen on dealing with such an erratic person. Being so unpredictable wasnโt exactly a virtue.
But as she turned, the girl grabbed her wrist, holding tight.
โHey! Ouch, let go!โ
The girlโs grip was strong, her sword-calloused hand rough to the touch.
Perhaps realizing sheโd hurt Tina, she loosened her hold, opening her mouth as if to speak but hesitating.
โLook, just say whatโs on your mind. All this grabbing isnโt cool.โ
โMm.โ
Tina sighedโsheโd finally heard the girlโs first word.
โSo, whatโs your deal? Got a problem with me, or are you afraid Iโll spill your secrets and want to silence me?โ
โNo, no, Iโฆโ
Maybe it was years of silence, but the girl spoke like early humans taming their tongues, stumbling over every few words.
โIโฆ can I goโฆ with you?โ
โHuh?โ Tinaโs head sprouted a giant question mark. โDo I know you?โ
Fresh out of the simulation, they were total strangers.
โIโฆ donโt know. Itโsโฆ instinct.โ
It was hard to describeโlike fish yearning for the sea or birds for the sky, her body and soul instinctively gravitated toward this stranger.
But she wasnโt sure if theyโd met, becauseโ
โWhy the eyepatch? Can you even see the road?โ
Tina reached out, only for the girl to reflexively block her.
โAh, s-sorry, thatโsโฆ instinct too.โ
โโฆโ Tina pondered.
Weird. Too weird.
What was under that eyepatch, guarded like a primal instinct?
Damn it, the more it was hidden, the more curious she got.
Was this some psychological game?
Fine, you win.
โLetโs be clear: youโre in a sorry state, and you havenโt attacked me, so Iโll help you find a place to stayโthough itโs not mine.
Second, no freeloading. What can you do for me or the family there? Youโll need to pull your weight.โ
Tina wasnโt about to bring a stranger home for nothing, especially not to mooch.
Even as a hired muscle, the girl needed value.
โIโฆ donโt know how to doโฆ anything.โ
โYour swordsmanship seemed pretty good. Why so humble now?โ Tina couldnโt figure out what this girl was thinking.
โThatโsโฆ instinct too. They wanted to hurt you, soโฆโ
โUgh, everythingโs โinstinctโ with you. Isnโt taking care of yourself an instinct too?โ
โUhโฆโ
The girl lowered her head, troubled. โTake careโฆ of myself? How?โ
Tina fell silent, feeling bad for scolding her further.
This wasnโt just naive innocence. At twenty-three or twenty-four, how could she live like a child?
So, when she was being beaten earlier, it wasnโt some masochistic quirkโshe genuinely lacked the instinct to resist?
โAlright, alright. I need a helper anyway. You work for me, and Iโll talk to the family. If extra costs come up, Iโll cover them.โ
โThank you.โ
It was the smoothest thing sheโd said, though just two words.
โWhatโs your name?โ
โIrene.โ
โAlright, Irene. You can call me Tina from now on.โ
They exchanged names.
Tina opened her umbrella, helped Irene up, and brought her back to the mansion.
At the gate, a maid greeted them, but the nobleman was wary.
โMiss, whoโs this?โ
โMy new helper. Sheโs got skills and will be key to finding Vanessa tomorrow.โ
โAlright, if sheโs a guest, Iโll have her treated well.โ Trusting Tina, he overlooked Ireneโs beggar-like appearance, noting her sword as a sign of credibility.
A maid approached. โNew miss, let me take you to clean up.โ
โNoโฆ donโtโฆโ Irene shrank back, clinging to Tinaโs arm.
โUh, sheโs shy. Iโll handle it.โ
Tina hadnโt expected Irene to trust only her, wary of others.
โVery well, the bathโs upstairs. Iโll lead the way.โ
The maid guided the drenched pair to the third floor, where a hot bath awaited. โIโll leave you two. Call if you need anything.โ
After the maid left, Tina and Irene stared at each other.
โYou can bathe yourself, right?โ Tina knew it was a long shot but asked anyway.
โNoโฆ I canโt.โ
โShouldโve seen that coming.โ
Resigned, Tina took charge. It was her first time bathing someone elseโa girl, no less.
But it wasnโt flirtatious; it felt like caring for a child.
โI canโt imagine how long itโs been since you last washed.โ
As she spoke, Tina removed Ireneโs soaked, filthy clothes, revealing pale skin underneath.
โฆA bit striking.
Too much for one hand to handle, huh?
โAhem, get in the tub. Iโll scrub you.โ
Irene obeyed, soaking in the steaming water, waiting for Tina.
โArms up. Good, down. Stretch your leg. Now your head, lean closerโฆโ
After a grueling ordeal, Tina finished.
โDone. Finally clean.โ
Wiping Ireneโs long hair, Tinaโs mind lingered on the soft texture.
Just the skin, mind youโnothing specific.
โBy the way, if you donโt bathe, do you not eat either?โ
โKind peopleโฆ give me food.โ Irene sat quietly, enjoying the scalp massage.
โAnd if you donโt meet kind people?โ
โIโฆ pick up scrapsโฆ eat.โ
Her tone was flat, as if it were normal.
โUgh, youโforget it. Stick with me, and you wonโt go hungry.โ
Tinaโs last bit of frustration turned to pity.
โNo one taught you how to survive?โ
โIโฆ donโt remember.โ
โYou lost your memory? How do you remember nothing?โ
โMaybeโฆ yes. Since I can recallโฆ Iโve been wandering.โ
Tina sighed.
What a tragic girl.
How could amnesia erase even her learned skills?
What kind of despair caused this?
If someone deliberately caused Ireneโs memory loss, they were beyond despicable.
