Chapter 12: The Transparent World Opens!
The kerosene lantern hanging from the beam flickered, its light spilling down from above. The shadows cast on the table looked as if they had come alive, baring fangs and claws.
Everyone held their breath. All the anomalies in the tavern focused their gazes on the four participants.
Russian Roulette officially began!
“What a coincidence. The first shot starts with me? Then allow me to test the gun for the beautiful Miss White Sugar~”
Werewolf Eric was also blindfolded with a black cloth strip. His tone carried a hint of surprise.
Because her eyes were completely covered, White Sugar could only tilt her ear and carefully distinguish through subtle sounds.
After a small rustling sound, the werewolf seemed to have raised the revolver, slowly aiming the muzzle at his own large wolf head.
He pulled the trigger.
Click——!
The first shot was a blank.
“What a pity it was a blank. Then the next shot belongs to the beautiful Miss White Sugar~”
The werewolf’s tone was relaxed, even carrying a trace of schadenfreude. White Sugar frowned slightly.
The werewolf was sitting before her. Was it a coincidence?
In Russian Roulette, the person who shoots before you holds a massive advantage over the next shooter.
If one could guess the position of the live round in the cylinder, they could fire a blank themselves and then spin the cylinder to set up the next person.
On the contrary, under the clockwise shooting rule, it was extremely difficult for White Sugar in the second position to target the werewolf in the first position while skipping the starving ghost in third and the scarecrow in fourth.
A moat formed by two anomalies?
White Sugar was speechless. Her luck really was too terrible.
At that moment, the sound of the revolver cylinder spinning came from her right. The girl was stunned.
Why would the werewolf choose to spin the cylinder?
White Sugar’s doubt was reasonable. When Russian Roulette was mentioned, with one live round in six chambers, many people would naturally assume the chance of being shot was 1/6.
In reality, it was not.
The 1/6 probability only applied to the first shot without spinning. After each blank was fired, one empty chance was eliminated, increasing the probability that the next shot would be live.
First shot 1/6, second shot 1/5, third shot 1/4…
As long as the cylinder wasn’t spun, the later the turn, the more dangerous it became. Choosing to spin reset the probability but carried the penalty of firing an extra shot.
Therefore, at least in the first round at the very beginning, the werewolf in the first position held absolute advantage. In such a situation, White Sugar really couldn’t understand why the other party would choose to spin the cylinder after firing one shot to reset the probability for her.
Unless… the werewolf knew the position of the live round, and spinning the cylinder wasn’t to help her reset the probability, but to move the live round to her next shot.
“You know where the bullet is?” White Sugar asked probingly.
“Me? Heh~” The werewolf chuckled lightly. “Miss White Sugar has misunderstood me. I, Eric, never cheat.”
From the sound of it, the werewolf placed the revolver back on the table.
“However, I’d quite like Miss White Sugar to guess whether the next shot is a live round or not.”
“Next person, please take the gun.” The tavern owner, acting as referee, spoke coldly.
Damn it, she had completely underestimated the opponent!
Perhaps this was exactly why they blindfolded everyone. There was no way to judge the other party’s thoughts through facial expressions or body language.
Just the first shot of the first round, and White Sugar already had to face three different probabilities.
Probability 1: The werewolf knew the live round’s position and adjusted it to the next shot. Without spinning, death rate 100%. Even with spinning, due to the extra shot penalty, death probability was still 33%.
Probability 2: The werewolf did not know the position. Spinning was a bluff. Without spinning, 16% death rate. With spinning, 33% death rate.
Probability 3: The werewolf knew the position and spun the cylinder a full circle before resetting it. Without spinning, 20% death rate. With spinning, 33% death rate.
The more she thought, the harder it was to decide!
“What’s wrong? Miss White Sugar still hasn’t decided to pick up the revolver?” The werewolf mocked. “You haven’t been scared witless, have you? Do you need me to fire it for you?”
“No need. Thank you.”
White Sugar answered coldly.
Knowing that dragging it out was pointless, the girl still picked up the revolver that had been placed on the table in front of her.
Just as she was hesitating whether to spin the cylinder, text slowly appeared in her right eye’s vision.
【The current chamber contains a live round.】
White Sugar froze. The hand holding the gun trembled slightly.
That’s right! Her right eye had the transplanted Eye of Breaking Delusion. How could she have forgotten that!
The next shot was really a live round. If she chose not to spin the cylinder, her death rate would be 100%!
Without the Eye of Breaking Delusion’s prompt, even White Sugar herself wouldn’t have known how to win.
“I guess the next shot is a live round, so my choice is to spin the cylinder.”
The corners of her mouth curved up slightly. White Sugar deliberately raised her volume so the werewolf on her right could hear.
Her words caused an immediate uproar in the surroundings.
“What is that stupid human doing?! Didn’t Mr. Eric already kindly spin the cylinder to reset it to 1/6 probability for her?”
“Why would she take the extra shot penalty and bet on 2/6 probability?”
“She doesn’t even know whether 16.67% or 33.33% is bigger. How foolish!”
“……”
White Sugar ignored the surrounding anomalies’ mockery. What they were calculating was only the completely random probability assuming the werewolf didn’t know the live round’s position.
But judging from the werewolf’s abnormal behavior of proactively spinning the cylinder earlier, combined with the fact that the current chamber really did contain a live round, the werewolf had clearly known the bullet’s position through some method.
As the saying went: You were the one who opened the wallhack first!
Since she had confirmed there was no danger, White Sugar stopped hesitating. She raised the revolver, aimed the muzzle at her temple, and used her index finger to flick the cylinder forward one notch, precisely avoiding the live round.
According to the penalty rules, White Sugar needed to pull the trigger twice this round.
The entire tavern fell deathly silent. All eyes focused on the pink-haired girl, quietly waiting for the outcome.
First trigger pull.
Click——!
First shot, blank.
The crisp sound was exceptionally clear in the deathly silent tavern. Everyone swallowed hard. Even they themselves didn’t realize that a trace of admiration had risen in their hearts toward the weak human they had looked down on moments ago.
White Sugar placed her finger on the revolver’s trigger once more and pulled it a second time.
Bang——!
Everyone’s hearts contracted violently with the loud sound. However, the imagined scene of her head being pierced by a bullet with brains splattering everywhere did not appear.
The loud noise had come entirely from the werewolf slamming his palm onto the table.
He raised his hand. A small patch of deep red bloomed in his palm. The werewolf grinned.
“Hehe, there was a fly buzzing non-stop by my ear. I couldn’t hold back and swatted it to death. I didn’t scare anyone, did I?”
