Chapter 15: Soft bread(3).
The two Cait Siths scampered to the table, eyes wide with astonishment, and sat down.
“Wow!”
“What are these?”
Their gazes were glued to the savory breads on the table.
“Bread?”
“But bread’s just bread, right? No food stuffed inside?”
They tilted their heads back and forth curiously.
I answered their puzzled looks.
“These are called savory breads. I came up with them.”
—Well, technically from my past life, but let’s keep that under wraps.
““Savory breads?””
They echoed in unison.
“I thought up breads with fillings. This is yakisoba bread, that’s katsu bread, and this is a hamburger.”
Cain reached for the yakisoba bread, Abel for the katsu bread.
““Mmm!””
Taking big bites, their eyes widened further in surprise, whiskers leaning forward with curiosity.
After chewing thoroughly and swallowing, they spoke excitedly.
“The bread’s so fluffy! It’s easy to bite through!”
“Is this really bread?”
“The stuff inside, this ‘savory’ thing, did you invent that too, Christina-nya? I love this yakisoba stuff, nya!”
“I love this katsu, nya!”
Amazed by the difference from the usual hard bread, they showered me with questions and praise.
“Hehe, tastes good, doesn’t it?”
““Nya!””
Nodding eagerly, they dove into their second bites, munching happily before reaching for the next. Their eyes met midair, and with a nod, they both grabbed hamburgers.
“This brown thing inside, never seen it, nya.”
“What is it, nya?”
They bit into them together. Their tails puffed up from base to tip with a twitch.
“What’s this, nya! Tastes like meat but not tough like meat, nya!”
“When you bite, the juices burst in your mouth, nya!”
They must’ve loved the hamburgers, devouring them eagerly.
“It’s called a hamburger. I put something called a hamburger patty inside.”
I explained briefly while eating my own.
““Hamburger?””
Since hamburgers didn’t exist in this world, they tilted their heads curiously, grooming their mouths with both front paws contentedly.
“Yup. You mince meat finely, mix it with eggs, onions, and breadcrumbs to make a patty. Then you cook it. Unlike plain grilled meat, it’s soft and delicious, right?”
““Nya!””
They meowed in agreement, signaling yes.
“This is delicious, nya.”
“You should make it again, nya.”
As they spoke, they reached for their remaining breads and ate eagerly. I finished my three breads, watching them, and sipped my milk.
The Cait Siths finished their breads and gulped down their milk.
“Ahh, so good, nya!”
“Christina-nya’s a recipe genius, nya!”
—Those words, though based on my past life’s recipes, I couldn’t take fully to heart.
Still, seeing the little Cait Siths eat so happily warmed my heart.
“The day after tomorrow, I’ll make a bread for lunch you’ve never had before. Look forward to it!”
At that, they cheered.
““Yay!””
Raising both front paws in delight.
That day, in my spare time, I prepared peach compote, strawberry jam, and blueberry jam for the Danish pastries.
