Chapter 34: My cat can do backflips
A Narrow Escape
Finally out of sight, Lin Lu let out a temporary sigh of relief.
Before the mixer, he’d sensed something off.
Why would PhD students seek out undergrads for a mixer?
As expected, it was a trap.
Luckily, he’d bolted fast, dodging disaster for the night.
As for tomorrow?
He’d deal with it later.
With so many enemies, every day survived was a win.
But as he walked, something felt wrong.
Why were there two shadows under the streetlamp?
A chill ran down his spine.
He turned slowly, only to see Mi Xue trailing him, her steps perfectly synced with his, silent as a ghost.
Under the dim yellow light, their eyes met awkwardly.
Suddenly, Mi Xue reached into her small backpack, pulling something out.
Lin Lu’s mind flashed with images of knives—switchblades, cleavers, daggers…
A wolf in sheep’s clothing!
Instinctively, he stepped back, pleading, “S-Senior, please spare me!”
The words felt eerily familiar.
Hadn’t Mi Xue said the same to him years ago in desperation?
Karma strikes back!
An Unexpected Gesture
Then Mi Xue, with her delicate eyes, pulled out… a piece of bread and offered it to him.
Her peach-blossom eyes blinked in confusion, unsure of what he meant.
“What?”
Lin Lu eyed the bread warily.
“You haven’t eaten dinner. You’ll be hungry,” she said softly.
His earlier panic had drained him, and his stomach was growling.
But Mi Xue’s odd behavior threw him off.
“You… followed me just to giveme bread?”
Mi Xue nodded, then shook her head.
As he suspected—not so simple.
Was she about to list his sins?
No more beating around the bush—just get to it!
Yet Mi Xue reached into her bag again, pulling out a carton of milk and handing it to him.
“Bread’s dry. Have some milk.”
After speaking, her shy gaze flicked to his face, studying his changes over the years.
But she quickly looked away after half a second.
‘He’s got a bit of stubble now…’
‘His Adam’s apple’s bigger…’
“So what’s your deal?”
Lin Lu stared at the milk in her left hand and bread in her right, utterly confused.
A Quiet Moment
Mi Xue sat on a nearby bench, gently patting the spot beside her.
Lin Lu sat cautiously, keeping two body lengths away for safety.
Soon, though, Mi Xue blushed and scooted closer, halving the distance.
Her faint, natural feminine scent wafted over with the night breeze.
Unlike Su Keke and the others’ perfume, Mi Xue wore no makeup—not even the “light makeup equals no makeup” kind.
Completely bare-faced, no eyeliner, lipstick, or perfume, she was a pure, natural beauty, evoking the innocent white-moonlight vibe of school days.
Mi Xue tore open the bread bag, holding it to Lin Lu’s mouth with a shy smile.
“I eat this in the lab when I’m hungry. It’s really good.”
Whether labs allowed food was beside the point—Lin Lu’s brain was too frazzled to care.
Dazed, he followed her lead, taking a bite.
Hmm…
Delicious!
Starving, Lin Lu devoured several more bites.
Mi Xue smiled softly, inserting a straw into the milk and holding it to his lips.
He took a sip.
Why was it so good?
Was there opium in it?
“You didn’t poison this, right…” he mumbled while eating, figuring he’d at least die full.
Mi Xue didn’t answer.
Instead, she glanced at the straw he’d used, blushed, and took a sip herself to prove it was safe.
Lin Lu was just hungry.
College life was like that—doing nothing all day yet always starving, craving food over math problems, capable of downing bowls of rice.
Skip a couple of meals, and even history class would look appetizing.
A Familiar Scene
Under the moonlight, the girl sat quietly, watching the boy eat, occasionally offering him milk and sneaking a shy sip herself.
The scene felt eerily familiar.
Back when Lin Lu played basketball late, missing cafeteria hours, he’d make Mi Xue, who was memorizing vocab nearby, buy bread and drinks from the school store.
He’d eat while she handed him the drink.
When he finished, a jade-like hand gently wiped crumbs from his mouth with a tissue.
Lin Lu was stunned.
It had been years since a girl was this attentive to him.
Was Mi Xue, after all this time, really being this kind to him?
Had all their past grievances been erased?
He’d sooner believe she was the daughter of Emperor Qin.
At least Su Keke had given him a fierce leg-slam as a greeting.
Zhuang Yanyue forced him to kneel and remove her shoes and stockings, humiliating him.
Yi Diandian used her student council president status to pressure him into event planning.
Suspecting a Trap
Lin Lu feared Mi Xue was playing a long game.
That’s why he’d said she was his scariest ex—a master of subtle, deadly moves.
A frog boiled slowly in warm water wouldn’t know it was dying!
So when Mi Xue offered a second bread, despite his hunger, he refused.
Eating more would seal his fate.
“You’re eating too little. It’s bad for you. Even at lunch, just a veggie dish. Guys can’t eat so little…”
Her words carried a hint of concern.
Lin Lu caught a key detail.
“You said lunch?”
As if she’d slipped up, Mi Xue blushed, instinctively covering her mouth.
The implication was clear: she’d seen him at the cafeteria.
Right after, he’d received that nourishing chicken leg rice delivery…
“You ordered that takeout for me?”
Mi Xue lowered her head, silently confirming.
How sweet—an ex seeing him hungry and ordering him food…
Sweet, my foot!
Lin Lu was terrified.
Wasn’t this creepy?
Mi Xue had tracked down his dorm, his new phone number, and even watched him eat!
She was gathering intel on her enemy, studying his routines for… shudder!
The thought was chilling.
Suddenly, her shy voice broke through.
“Junior Lin… want to visit my new place? My cat can do backflips. Wanna see?”
