Chapter 5: What to Do When You Feel Like the Boss Is Out to Get You

My name is Yan Huimeng, and I’m 31 years old.

After retiring from a magical girl squad, I returned to my hometown to work at the Bureau of Magical Affairs.

Now, I’m the deputy director, just one step away from taking over if my boss gets promoted, ready to achieve greater glory.

But things don’t always go as planned.

If only the magical girl rookie in front of me wasn’t my boss’s daughter.

This morning, Yan Huimeng met her idol and former squad captain, Magical Girl Corona, grabbing a few autographs for her junior before transforming and flying back to Tongzhou City.

As she hovered above the agreed-upon Wetland Park, her senses spread out, detecting Jin Yan’s magical signature alongside an unfamiliar trace.

She descended slowly toward them.

Yan Huimeng first noticed Jin Yan—or rather, ordinary high school girl Xiao Yan—waving her transformation device with one hand while cupping the other to her mouth, shouting, “Senior, over here, over here!”

Next to her must be the newly awakened magical girl.

A glint of shimmering silver caught her eye under the sunlight, followed by a delicate, charming face.

Hiss—

Why does she look so much like Brother Lu’s daughter? Yan Huimeng sucked in a breath, contributing to global warming.

She had seen Lu Yue’s face on Lu Xin’s phone lock screen before.

Back then, Lu Yue was just starting middle school.

Though her features had matured, the distinctive silver hair and purple eyes made it easy to identify her.

That color combination was just too rare.

“Are you Lu Yue?” Yan Huimeng asked, gently landing from the air and extending her gloved right hand.

“Yes, Senior,” Lu Yue replied, stepping forward to shake her hand.

Meanwhile, Xiao Yan was lost in a mental storm.

How does Senior know Lu Yue’s name? And if she knows her name, why call her Lu Yue?

Steam visibly rose from Xiao Yan’s head.

Yan Huimeng glanced at her, pulled her hand back, and patted Xiao Yan’s head to snap her out of it before continuing to talk with Lu Yue, leaving Xiao Yan babbling incoherently.

“I’m Yan Huimeng, magical girl codename ‘Amethyst.’”

“Please introduce yourself,” Yan Huimeng said, propping her chin.

“OK, my name is Lu Yue…” Lu Yue began her self-introduction.

Once Lu Yue finished, Yan Huimeng got to the point—evaluating the new magical girl.

“So, Xiao Yue—can I call you that?”

“Of course, Senior,” Lu Yue nodded obediently.

“Can you show me your magical girl form?” Yan Huimeng asked, starting the evaluation.

“Um, Senior,” Lu Yue said weakly, raising her hand.

“I don’t know how to transform.”

“You’re a magical girl, and you don’t know how to transform?” Yan Huimeng asked, puzzled.

Summoning a transformation device and transforming is an instinctive drive after awakening.

How could a magical girl not know how?

“Then how did you awaken?” Yan Huimeng asked.

“I used my magic to activate Jin Yan’s transformation device, and that’s how I awakened as a magical girl,” Lu Yue said, her tone tinged with pride, a confident smile curving her lips.

Unlike Lu Yue’s cheerful demeanor, Yan Huimeng felt a chill run down her spine, as if plunged into an icy abyss.

Wiping nonexistent sweat from her forehead, Yan Huimeng could only be thankful that Lu Yue was standing before her unharmed.

Due to the unique nature of a magical girl’s transformation device, anyone else using it could disrupt their internal magic flow, potentially causing life-threatening consequences.

Thankfully, Yan Huimeng was the first to discover Lu Yue’s awakening, and no major issues had arisen.

Reassuring herself, Yan Huimeng moved on to guiding Lu Yue’s transformation.

“Come, Xiao Yue, hold my hand,” Yan Huimeng said, extending her right hand.

Lu Yue gently grasped the silk-gloved hand adorned with golden accents.

“Now, I’ll guide you with pure mental energy. Open your mind, don’t resist me.”

“Mm,” Lu Yue responded softly.

Closing her eyes, she felt a cool sensation flow from her arm into her body.

Her mind emptied, and then something—a feeling—emerged.

“Focus on the thing that suddenly appeared in your heart,” Yan Huimeng’s voice echoed in her ears.

“Picture it as an object with physical form.”

In the blankness of her mind, specks of starlight appeared, slowly coalescing into a long, solid shape.

“Now, with your will, imagine it moving to your hand.”

Lu Yue opened her eyes and extended her right hand.

Starlight gathered, and a small knife appeared in her palm.

The knife had intricate cutout patterns on its blade, etched with complex runes.

Upon closer inspection, faint magical light seemed to flow within them.

Lu Yue ran her fingers over the silver handle, accented with purple patterns.

Though made of magic, it felt metallic.

Truly, magic could do anything.

Staring at the gleaming blade, Lu Yue wanted to test its sharpness.

She ran her fingertip along the edge, leaving only a faint pressure mark.

“It’s pretty, but looks better than it cuts,” Lu Yue muttered.

“That’s a reflection of your own heart. Unless you’re determined to harm yourself, a magical girl’s weapon won’t hurt you,” Yan Huimeng explained patiently.

“Now that you’ve summoned your transformation device, try transforming into your magical girl form.”

“Silently say ‘transform’ in your mind while channeling your desire to transform.”

Starlight converged, and Lu Yue transformed into her magical girl form from that day.

Her appearance remained the same—just a change of outfit.

“Wow, I’m wearing this outfit again,” Lu Yue said, looking down and inspecting her magical girl attire.

“Good. Since transformation is no issue, try releasing it now,” Yan Huimeng said, also admiring Lu Yue’s stunning outfit.

Magical girl costumes were never dull.

“Alright, Senior.”

Lu Yue released her transformation, her clothes reverting to her casual attire.

Her magical fluctuations reached Tier 5, with stable energy flow and no change in appearance.

Truly a born magical girl prodigy.

Yan Huimeng nodded approvingly.

As expected of Brother Lu’s daughter—tiger father, no weak cub.

By now, it was noon.

Yan Huimeng glanced at the sun overhead and said, “It’s lunchtime. Why don’t we celebrate at a restaurant? Tongzhou City has a new magical girl, after all.”

“Of course, my treat.”

“Huh? Food? Awesome, awesome!” Xiao Yan, who had been babbling incoherently, snapped awake and rushed to Yan Huimeng’s side.

“Alright, alright, there’s food for you too,” Yan Huimeng said, chuckling and patting Xiao Yan’s head.

“After lunch, we’ll return to Wetland Park. I’ll go over some basic magical girl knowledge and precautions.”

“Xiao Yan, I’ve trained you before, but you need to listen too,” Yan Huimeng said, eyeing Xiao Yan’s silly expression with some concern.

“It’s mainly to reinforce your understanding,” she added.

Turning to Lu Yue, she asked, “Every magical girl has a codename. What do you plan to call yourself?”

Lu Yue thought for a moment, feeling the twinkling power deep within her, and said slowly, “I’ll go with… Polaris.”

And so, today, Magical Girl Polaris took her first step into her magical girl journey.
