Chapter 7: Treat Yourself.
White Sugar closed the diary, letting out a long breath.
One could say that a large part of the reason she had survived until now came from the diary left behind by her predecessor.
It had helped her avoid countless fatal dangers.
Even though White Sugar didn’t even know that girl’s name.
But now, everything was about to change. The Eye of Breaking Delusion had finally given her the capital to stand firm in this dark world.
“Senior, I will carry your share of the burden and keep on living!”
This kindness was difficult to repay. White Sugar could only swear silently in her heart: once she became strong enough to no longer live every day in fear, or even gained the chance to return to Earth, she would do everything in her power to find the senior’s family and take good care of them.
The flame inside the lantern flickered gently. The warm yellow light spread across the girl’s face, her expression full of determination.
At this moment, the weight of life felt especially heavy.
Even knowing the road ahead was filled with nine chances of death and one of survival, White Sugar would never let herself die easily!
She took off her old coat and changed into a loose white nightgown.
Blowing out the lantern on the bedside table, the room fell into complete darkness.
White Sugar climbed onto the bed and buried her entire face into the pillow that had been washed until it felt somewhat stiff.
The room was so quiet that even her breathing sounded exceptionally clear. Perhaps tonight’s experiences had been too intense, so White Sugar, who should have fallen asleep by now, felt no drowsiness.
This was a bit troublesome…
Some pressure was invisible. As a successor, White Sugar could clearly sense from reading her predecessor’s diary that the senior’s mental state had grown progressively worse over time.
White Sugar had originally thought her own mental resilience would allow her to avoid being affected as much as possible.
But when night came, she climbed into bed and her body truly relaxed, only then did she belatedly realize it.
Her arms were trembling slightly, beyond her conscious control…
This was bad. To stay mentally sharp and clear-headed at all times, she needed a way to fall asleep quickly.
The girl suddenly sat up on the bed, clenched her small fists, and knocked on her head.
“White Sugar, White Sugar, use your clever little brain and think hard. What’s a way to make yourself feel tired quickly and fall asleep fast!”
Doing push-ups or squat jumps two hundred times would make too much noise and might disturb the Witch Teacher next door.
Plus, being covered in sticky sweat would feel uncomfortable.
Not suitable. Not suitable.
Besides that, the only other quick way to fall asleep seemed to be that one method.
Thankfully the lantern had already been blown out and there was no mirror in the bedroom. Otherwise, the girl would definitely feel ashamed of her face gradually turning as red as an apple.
“Cough cough, just treat it as a way to keep myself from going crazy. Trying it once in a while should be fine!”
White Sugar quickly convinced herself.
She was already an adult. Occasionally rewarding herself with some relaxation was perfectly normal for any girl!
Self-entertainment was much better than messing around outside. As long as it was moderate, she was still a good girl!
With that thought, White Sugar stopped hesitating. She hopped off the bed, quietly felt her way in the dark to the washroom, and carefully washed her hands thoroughly.
When she returned, she carefully locked the bedroom door, then climbed back onto the bed.
“Mmm… After crossing over for so long, it’s about time I checked this body… humph… to see if there are any hidden health issues.”
The Eye of Breaking Delusion in her right eye wasn’t the original one. Who knew if it was some powerful anomalous organ? What if there were still lingering rejection issues inside her body?
That could be fatal.
It was time to seriously and thoroughly check.
……
At the same time, next door.
The faint light from the kerosene lamp barely illuminated the parchment ledger on the desk.
A pair of bright crimson eyes, like a predator hidden in darkness. A few strands of gray hair fell across the back of her hand. The witch lady’s face was cold and stern.
The girl had not gone to sleep early as White Sugar had assumed. The quill in her hand continued scraping across the parchment, as if writing something.
【Subject: White Sugar】
【Race: Human】
【Date: April 3】
【Summary: The ‘Eye of Breaking Delusion’ belongs to them. I followed the clues to Undead Street, where a small accident occurred. The ‘Eye of Breaking Delusion’ has completely bonded with a human girl named ‘White Sugar’. This situation has never happened before.
After careful consideration, I spent seven days completely replacing that human girl’s teacher to observe her.
If the observed individual dies unnaturally during the observation period, I will immediately recover the ‘Eye of Breaking Delusion’.】
Claire put down her quill and murmured softly.
“White Sugar… Interesting~”
Clearly as weak as an ant that could be crushed at any moment, yet she could still remain calm when facing beings far stronger than herself.
She even turned the tables and made anomalies many times stronger than her feel fear.
Her individual will was strong enough to override racial instinct.
Claire had seen humans before, but never one like this.
This was the first time Claire had taken an interest in a frail human, and she was curious just how long White Sugar could survive without any external help.
In this world full of mental pollution and evil curses, humans could go mad at any time.
Just as Claire stood up, preparing to blow out the kerosene lamp and rest,
Her ears twitched. She faintly heard subtle sounds coming from next door. She paused, then frowned slightly.
She remembered the room next door used to be a storage room. Now it should be where her student White Sugar lived. Why wasn’t she sleeping so late?
As she moved closer, the faint sounds gradually became clearer.
“Mmm… Ha… Ha…”
She buried her face hard into the pillow, her nasal breathing heavy.
This kind of noise… it couldn’t be that she had really gone mad and was doing anaerobic exercise in the middle of the night.
The corners of Claire’s mouth curved up slightly. A hard-to-describe delight surged in her heart. She picked up her quill again and began recording on the parchment.
“Under continuous high-pressure environments, in order to maintain sanity and avoid falling into madness, do humans relax their minds through certain methods?”
“Interesting~”
She silently waited for White Sugar to finish her session and start another solo ranked match.
Claire leaned against the wall, her crimson eyes containing neither disgust nor revulsion—only the pure thirst for knowledge that witches held toward biological matters.
When the sounds next door finally stopped and were replaced by the girl’s steady breathing after falling asleep,
Only then did Claire record the duration of each session, the intervals between them, and exactly how many solo ranked matches White Sugar had played that night. New knowledge filled the parchment in dense lines of text.
