Chapter 66: The Noble Squad (IV)

I struggled to drag Chriss into the utterly chaotic restaurant.
Once I felt we were far enough inside, I let go of her, collapsing to the side and gasping for air—her heavy armor was ridiculously heavy.

“Phew… phew… cough cough… Alright… let’s see if I can wake this lady up.”

After catching my breath and coughing a few times to steady myself, I scooted over to the blonde woman’s side.
If I could build some rapport with her now, it might make leaving the city later a lot easier.

With that thought, I gently patted Chriss’s cheek.
“Hey! Wake up, Chriss! Come on!”

I called out to her, urging her to respond.
From her earlier state, it seemed like she’d collapsed from exhaustion.
The recovery potion I gave her should be absorbed quickly by a silver-rank warrior like her, so she ought to wake up soon.

“Mmm…”

Chriss let out a soft sound, and finally, her eyes fluttered open, dazed and unfocused.
“Phew… thank goodness, you’re finally awake.”

I looked at Chriss, letting out a small sigh of relief.
But then, a sudden chill ran down my neck, and my body slammed hard onto the ground!

So painful—

“…Who are you!?”

The moment Chriss snapped awake, she instinctively pinned me to the floor.
In one swift motion, she drew a dagger from her waist and held it to my throat, ready to slit it at any moment.

“…Calm down! Calm down! I’m human!”

Seeing Chriss’s over-the-top reaction, I hurriedly shouted at her.
“My name’s Su Mengmeng, an adventurer! I ran into a bunch of city guards and a silver-rank warrior squad, and I saved you on the way! They’re still out there fighting that golden-rank blood clan! I dragged you in here to avoid the battle! Oh, and I gave you a recovery potion too!”

“…”

Chriss, still pressing me down, froze for a moment.
After getting a clear look at my face, she slowly withdrew her dagger.
“…Phew… phew… Is… is that so…? S-Sorry, I got too worked up.”

Chriss stammered, then slumped to the side, panting heavily.
I couldn’t help but grumble inwardly.

What did I do to deserve this? I just saved someone, and I nearly got my throat slit for it—plus, I banged into the two egg babies in my backpack…

Speaking of which, thank goodness Chriss let me go in time.
Otherwise, she’d have been hit with a merciless mental attack from the two egg babies.
The egg babies had been in a dormant state, but when Chriss pinned me down, the jolt woke them instantly, and they were ready to attack her.
Talk about one shock after another—if Chriss had been taken out by the egg babies, things would’ve gotten really interesting.

That said, the egg babies’ shells seemed pretty sturdy…
At least regular bumps wouldn’t crack them.

“Phew… ow, that hurts!”

I let out a long breath, but as I tried to stand, a sharp pain shot through my right palm.
Looking down, I saw my hand had been cut by broken glass on the floor, with a few drops of blood dripping onto the shards.

“Tch! My whole life is just one big debt!”

I clicked my tongue, a bit annoyed, but didn’t dwell on it.
I pulled a small roll of bandages from my storage space and wrapped up my right hand.
With my limited funds, I hadn’t bought any leg or hand guards—just the leather armor protecting my main body.
So my hands were unprotected, which is probably how I got cut when Chriss shoved me down.
