Chapter 86: Why am I so unlucky (Part 3)
Cannon shells whistled over our heads, landing in the distance with deafening explosions.
I dove to a corner, shielding my backpack with the two egg babies beneath me.
If my body got blown up, I could probably revive.
But the egg babies… how much damage could they take?
I could come back, but I didn’t know if they’d inherit that ability or if they could revive while still in their shells.
Without hesitation, I prioritized protecting them, so even if a shell landed nearby and tore me apart, they’d have a better chance of surviving.
The bombardment lasted a while before stopping.
Hearing the silence, I lifted my head to look around.
The train station itself hadn’t taken much damage, but… the train on the tracks was completely wrecked.
“…They’re trying to cripple the railway?”
I froze, then realized, based on my experience, what the aliens were after.
As an infiltration force, they likely had limited shells, so they stopped after a brief barrage.
But where did they get cannons?
Infiltration units can bring artillery now?
I was stunned, and at that moment, Nico rushed over to me.
“Mengmeng, are you okay?!”
“I-I’m fine…”
Nico helped me up, and I brushed the dust off myself while responding.
“Those d*mn alien scum—where did they get cannons?”
Nico, after helping me, cursed the aliens under her breath.
“There’s only one possibility—the defensive artillery positions near the train station were infiltrated, and the aliens used our own cannons to shell the railway.”
Carter, looking disheveled, walked over and spoke to Nico and me, clearly having heard her cursing.
“The shelling’s stopped now. The garrison likely counterattacked and retook the artillery positions. The troops here haven’t seen combat in a while, so it’s no surprise they got sloppy.”
Carter pieced together the situation in an instant, then sighed helplessly.
At that moment, the train station’s guards snapped into action, rushing to clear the train wreckage, bodies, and groaning wounded near the tracks.
“…What now? We probably can’t leave by train anytime soon.”
Katherine spoke with worry, clearly feeling the situation was grim.
“The shelling was deliberately extended. The railway’s likely heavily damaged and won’t be operational for at least three days.”
Carter rubbed his chin, muttering after a moment of thought.
My heart sank with unease.
…All I wanted was to leave this godforsaken, dangerous place! Is it really this hard?!
I couldn’t help but think, feeling utterly helpless.
